The mission
With new government funding, Scottish universities and NHS Scotland are collaborating with designers to tackle the pressing issue of climate change. It's currently early in the project, i've been drafted in to help gather insights about the NHS' huge carbon footprint and how hospital staff resonate with the issue.
To deliver a successful project, I identified key targets that needed to be hit...
Extract data from hospital staff about NHS related environmental sustainability
Be visually interesting and engaging
Provoke conversation
Quickly give context about the topic
Developing a visual style
The 'Z style' plywood board design made a perfect stand-alone installation. The 90 degree corners easily signify the change to a new topic. Since this level of the project was still at a prototype phase, it was important to work on a budget conscious and fast build basis.
I chose a colour palette for the posters that contrasts nicely with the light plywood and gives a quick subconscious signifier of the sustainability topic. I designed the posters and vinyl infographics to be digestible and aesthetically pleasing to those not from a design background.
Feedback has been positive, with hospital staff praising the way the designs stand out in a busy and bland hospital.
Delivering a design
Testing the design in Ninewells hospital was a great success. Hospital staff, from Doctors to Chefs, were interested in engaging with the installation and contributing to our research. UoD and the NHS gained some great data and will continue to run sessions with this design in the future.
